For a home NAS: 2.5GbE. For a workstation editing 4K video over the network: 5GbE or 10GbE. For a general office PC: stick with 1GbE. Here is how we decided, and why the “faster is always better” instinct costs you more than it should.

Your Situation Determines the Right Speed

Network speed is not a spec you maximize. It is a spec you match to your workload. Four typical scenarios cover most buyers:

  • Home user with a NAS or media server. You stream 4K video, back up photos, and occasionally transfer large files. Your switch is unmanaged, your cables are Cat5e or Cat6, and you do not want to rewire the house.
  • Content creator or engineer with a workstation. You edit 4K or 8K video directly from a network-attached storage array, work with large CAD files, or run local virtual machines that need fast storage access.
  • Small business with 5 to 20 employees. Your file server handles simultaneous access from multiple workstations. Backup windows are getting longer. You have a managed switch and Cat6 cabling.
  • Home lab enthusiast or prosumer. You run Proxmox or ESXi, experiment with virtualization, and want your lab network to resemble a real data center. You already have Cat6a or are willing to run it. For multi-VM setups, SR-IOV lets you pass NIC virtual functions directly to VMs for near-native network performance.
